In November 2022, SEAWAY launched a support campaign for local growers by providing a full end to end supply chain solution to international markets which had never been available out of Northern Australia before.

Along with provided trucking services from local growers and farms to our airside facilities, SEAWAY commissioned a weekly flight service from Darwin to major international markets through Cathay Pacific Cargo. This seasonal service, utilising a Boeing 777 aircraft, was scheduled to run for five weeks, aiming to export an estimated 285 tonnes of Northern Territory mangoes.

The initiative was a collaborative effort involving SEAWAY, Cathay Pacific Cargo, and AIRWAY highlighting a joint commitment to supporting local growers and meeting global demand for Australian produce.

The primary objectives of this cargo service were:

  • Support Local Growers: Enhance market access for Northern Territory mango producers by providing a reliable export route
  • Meet International Standards: Ensure mangoes meet international protocols through treatment processes.
  • Expand Market Reach: Facilitate the introduction of Australian mangoes into key international markets, increasing their global supply.

Several key steps were involved in the successful execution of the mango export initiative:

  • Landside logistics
  • SEAWAY coordinated trucking service to collect fruit from farm sand deliver direct to Darwin airport for processing.

Vapor Heat Treatment (VHT)

  • State-of-the-art VHT technology was used at the Darwin facility. This environmentally friendly process ensured the fruit adhered to international protocols, eliminating disease and fruit flies while preserving quality.

Weekly Flights:

  • Cathay Pacific Cargo operated one flight per week using a Boeing 777 aircraft. This frequency was designed to handle the volume of mangoes and meet the      export demand

Partnerships and Logistics

  • The initiative involved collaboration between SEAWAY, Cathay Pacific Cargo. SEAWAY managed the airside facility in Darwin, which is equipped to handle high volumes of produce efficiently.
  • AIRWAY provided advanced technology for the processing of mangoes, maintaining high industry standards from picking to delivery

Outcomes and Results

The seasonal cargo service resulted in several positive outcomes:

  • Successful Export:
    Approximately 285 tonnes of mangoes were successfully exported to South Korea, Hong Kong and Dubai.
  • Enhanced Market Access:
    Northern Territory mangoes gained entry into new international markets, strengthening the presence of Australian produce globally.
  • Quality Assurance:
    The application of VHT technology ensured that the mangoes met international standards, arriving in prime condition without disease or pests.
  • Local Support:
    The initiative provided significant support to local growers, addressing their need for reliable and efficient export solutions.
